CHAIRMAN BANES CONTINUES TO HELP SENIORS
WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, OTHERS OPEN: OTHER SENIOR REPAIRS PROGRAMS
In challenging times, it's our duty as leaders to step up and find innovative solutions to support those who need it most. That's why I'm proud to share the success story of our senior repair program funded by the American Rescue Plan in Newton County, Georgia.
As many of you know, the economic impacts of Covid-19 have been harsh, particularly on our senior population. To address this, our Board of Commissioners established a program aimed at providing essential repairs for our seniors, ensuring their safety and well-being. With grants of up to $30,000 available, we were able to make a real difference in the lives of 278 seniors in our community.
However, as the demand for assistance exceeded our initial projections, the funds eventually ran dry. Anticipating that there would be many seniors who would not be able to get the assistance through the Senior Repair Program, I saw this challenge as an opportunity to get creative and explore alternative avenues to continue supporting our constituents. In 2022, we found the Action, Incorporated Weatherization program that is a State program that focuses on assisting both individuals and families in their efforts to maintain safe, energy efficient housing. This information was shared with seniors who successfully received repairs through the program. The information can be found at www.actionathens.org or by calling Stephanie Taylor at (706) 546-8293 ext 19 or email at staylor@actionincorporated.org.
In times like these, when one door closes, others open. We refuse to leave our seniors behind, and through collaborative efforts and resourcefulness, we are dedicated to finding ways to address their needs. We remain committed to finding solutions that ensure no one is left behind.
This experience shows the importance of proactive and adaptable leadership. It's not enough to rely solely on government funding or predetermined programs. We must be willing to think outside the box, explore unconventional solutions, and always prioritize the well-being of our constituents. I don’t believe in just complaining negatively about a situation without taking action to seek results, as negative complaining alone doesn’t bring about change. I am deeply committed to the mindset of turning challenges into chances and taking action to make things better. I pledge to continue advocating for our seniors and finding creative solutions to address their needs, no matter the challenges we may face. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community where everyone has the support and resources they need to thrive.
